Advance Praise for Sardis and Stamm

Here’s what people are saying about Sardis and Stamm

“A beautiful book that engenders a naturalist’s curiosity and gentle stewardship in children. Readers are inspired to observe and extend themselves to care for the Earth as they read of a young explorer’s act of compassion and the impact it had on her and her butterfly friend. Every page introduces you to rare plants and animals that you really can find if you slow down and start to pay attention. The rich illustrations bring you down on your hands and knees to explore and discover what nature has to offer. Children will want to make these or similar discoveries themselves and follow the example of a curious and caring girl. I can’t wait to share this book with my children.”

JOHN MUIR LAWS, Artist and Author, The Laws Guide to Drawing Birds

“The Antioch Sand Dunes stirred old memories for me. As a little girl my mom told me stories about my dad working in the ‘sand mines’ in Antioch before I was born. She said she was scared every day he went to work that he might not come home because it was such a treacherous job. Before reading Sardis and Stamm, I had no real knowledge of the impact those mines had on the environment. Now I have pictures and a moving story of regeneration and hope to go with that rather uncomfortable, bittersweet memory. Well done!”

ANN CAUDLE, Science Illustrator and Instructor,
CSUMB Science Illustration Program

“This moving story in lovely verse about a girl, a butterfly, and many tiny creatures is a fabulous way to entice children – and adults – to enjoy the surprises and mysteries of the natural world.”

BOB SCHILDGEN (aka Mr. GREEN), Environmental Advice Columnist,
Sierra (Magazine)

“A charming story, delightfully illustrated, about an endangered butterfly that’s just one of the many plants and critters surviving in the remarkable Antioch Dunes, a protected wildlife area that more Bay Area folks should know about.”

DAVID PERLMAN, Science Editor,
San Francisco Chronicle

“Sardis and Stamm is a heartwarming introduction to the odd and beautiful inhabitants of a disappearing ecosystem. Richly illustrated with biologically accurate plants and animals, and a story that provides ample opportunity for discussion and debate, Sardis and Stamm is a worthy tale and a lesson in conservation for all ages.”

DR. PETER OBOYSKI, Essig Museum of Entomology

“The more that is learned about [the Antioch Dunes], the more likely they are to be supported and protected. It is never too early to start learning about their value and vulnerability. This book for children is an excellent start in that direction.”

NORMAN D. PENNY, California Academy of Sciences

“[Sardis and Stamm] is beautifully illustrated and factually accurate, with an impressive level of detail on a subject that is rarely presented so accessibly to non-experts.”
